The Do’s and Don’ts of Synthesizing Essay’s

Do’s:

  1. control language, make arguments clear
  2. combine source with opinion and form cohesive argument
  3. use detail
  4. stay on topic
  5. support thesis with sources
  6. use multiple sources (usually three or more)

Don’ts:

  1. Try to use more sources then what will effectivley get your point across
  2. write a compare and contrast essay
  3. mention info without giving adequate source info
  4. over simplfy sources. sometimes the points made are supposed to be complex and by simplfying them down, you take away from the source and what it was trying to accomplish

other then these things don’t be afraid to use your voice in your essay and don’t let the sources over-power your voice in the essay. make sure your opinion is heard clearly.
